Legal Protection for Immigrants from Crisis-Affected Countries
Apply for or Renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in New Jersey
Temporary Protected Status (Tps): A Safe Haven For Immigrants In The U.S.
When war, natural disasters, or humanitarian crises strike a country, nationals from that country may be granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States. This program allows eligible individuals to live and work lawfully in the U.S. for a limited period—without fear of deportation.
At Reana Garcia Law Group, we help immigrants in New Jersey apply for, renew, or adjust their status under TPS. We understand the importance of protecting your future, your family, and your right to safety—and we are here to guide you every step of the way.
What Is Temporary Protected Status (Tps)?
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a humanitarian immigration status designated by the U.S. government for nationals of certain countries facing:
- Armed conflict (civil war, unrest)
- Natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes)
- Extraordinary and temporary conditions
TPS provides temporary protection from deportation and allows individuals to live and work legally in the U.S. during the designated period.
Benefits Of Tps
- Protection from deportation while TPS is in effect
- Authorization to work legally in the U.S.
- Ability to apply for travel authorization (Advance Parole)
- Renewable status, depending on DHS review
- Pathway to other immigration benefits, in some cases
TPS does not automatically lead to a green card—but it can be a stepping stone to other forms of relief or adjustment of status under specific circumstances.
Current Tps-designated Countries (As Of Latest Dhs Guidance)
Note that these statuses are subject to change with the new administration. Some of the countries currently designated for TPS include:
- Venezuela
- Haiti
- El Salvador
- Honduras
- Nicaragua
- Ukraine
- Syria
- Afghanistan
- Sudan
- Cameroon
- Myanmar (Burma)
For a full and updated list, visit the official DHS TPS Country Designations.
Who Is Eligible For Tps?
To qualify for TPS, you must:
- Be a national of a TPS-designated country (or a person with no nationality who last habitually resided in one)
- Have continuously resided in the U.S. since the specified eligibility date
- Have been physically present in the U.S. since the most recent TPS designation date
- Not be inadmissible due to certain criminal convictions or immigration violations
- File during the open registration or re-registration period
Each country has specific registration deadlines, and failure to file on time can result in the loss of protection. We help you meet every deadline with confidence.
How We Help With Tps Applications
- Initial TPS Applications (Form I-821)
We prepare and submit accurate applications with proof of eligibility, continuous presence, and identity. - Work Authorization Requests (Form I-765)

We assist with timely renewal of your TPS benefits before the re-registration deadline. - Late Initial Filing & Humanitarian Justifications
If you missed a registration window, we assess if you qualify for late filing under special circumstances. - Waivers of Inadmissibility (Form I-601)
If you’re ineligible due to certain offenses or past immigration history, we help you file for necessary waivers.
Who Should Apply For Tps?
You should consider applying for TPS if:
- You are from a country currently designated for TPS
- You are undocumented or on a temporary visa and fear returning to your home country
- You have missed a prior TPS registration period and may now qualify
- You are concerned about your immigration status but want protection from removal
- You want to legally work and live in the U.S. while your country recovers from crisis
